Climate Change being a global phenomenon has unequivocally been considered as one of the most serious threats to sustainable development with possible adverse impacts on natural resources thereby affecting food security, human health and economic activities.
Punjab
is predominantly an agrarian state solely dependent on limited
natural resources for livelihoods and economy. Some of the key
sectors such as agriculture, water, forest, ecosystems and
biodiversity are however, facing a number of developmental pressures
and environmental challenges.
Climate change has aggravated the concerns of key sectors in the state. Observation data indicates that overall temperature has increased as compared to the baseline of 1971-2000 whereas the annual average precipitation has decreased and is projected to show high level of variability. This is likely to adversely impact productivity of agriculture and allied sectors besides bringing new health challenges.
