The volume of wastewater generated by domestic,
industrial and commercial sources has increased with population, urbanization,
improved living conditions and economic development.
The treated wastewater produced by the Sewage Treatment Plant. (STPs) can act as an additional source of water for utilizing for non-potable purposes to supplement limited fresh water resources available in the State.
Department of Environment has prepared an Action Plan for Reuse of Treated Wastewater as per NGT Order Dated 27.11.18 to promote reuse of treated sewerage on sustainable basis for non-potable applications and reducing dependence on fresh water resources & enhancing water efficiency
Salient Features of Action Plan for Reuse of Treated Wastewater
In order to promote reuse of treated wastewater
of STPs & CETPs, following measures have been chalked out:
Setting up of facilities for reuse of treated wastewater for Irrigation
Utilization of treated wastewater for rejuvenation of water bodies such as wetlands and drains
Promotion for reuse for other non-potable purposes such as
Industrial processes
Aquaculture
Urban landscaping & green belts
Construction activities & concrete mixing
Domestic reuse (Flushing, cleaning, lawns, etc.)
Thermal Power Plants (Cooling purposes)
Sprinkling for dust control
Washing of railway tracks
Fire brigades /hydrants
Capacity building & awareness campaign on reuse of water
